The nuts and bolts of a driving assessment
1️⃣ Off-road assessment
An office-based assessment reviews medical and driving history and assesses individual driving skills e.g. cognition, physical abilities, to identify any limitations that may impact safe driving.
2️⃣ On-road assessment
A practical driving assessment is conducted with an occupational therapy driving assessor and specialised driving instructor. This assessment evaluates if there are any concerns with safely driving on road, with particular attention to any impairments or deficits noted in the off road assessment.
3️⃣ Reporting
Following the assessment, a detailed report is provided to your GP and/or medical specialist, and in some cases, the Medical Reporting Unit of the Queensland Transport and Main Roads Department. Your GP or medical specialist will make the final decision on your ability to commence or return to driving.
